Better UX for Government
A series of free ‘before work’ UX workshops for people who work in public service and want to build their expertise in a human centred approach to user experience design.

UX Gym is hosting a series of one-hour workshops free for anyone who works for a government organisation. Each session covers a different stage of a human centred user experience design process including practical methods you can use immediately. These sessions are based on our popular UX Gym one-day design courses. Attendees get access to full course notes and the UX Gym Slack community.

Who is it for?

This course is free for anyone who works for a government organisation. If you are not sure if you qualify, register with your work email address and we will let you know if you aren’t eligible. No previous experience is necessary, but people who have experience of UX design are more than welcome to come along and brush up.

We designed it for:

  • People working directly on user experience, customer experience, and service design projects. This series focuses on digital UX projects, but the general principles are applicable to any experience design work.
  • People who manage, commission, or liaise with people working on UX design projects.
  • Product owners, designers, developers and BAs interested in UX or human-centred design generally.

Monday: Introduction to UX and planning UX work

Monday 5 September 7:30am - 8:30am

This session introduces the fundamental concepts behind human-centred design and identifying the activities required for a successful UX project.
It covers:

  • Basic principles and definitions – The principles behind an evidence-based, user-first approach to design and basic UX terminology.
  • Planning UX work – Setting a UX project up for success and identifying the activities and steps you need for a successful outcome.
  • Method: Assumption mapping – Have a turn at assumption mapping, a method that helps you identify how much you actually know about a design problem in order to plan a project better and help control the design conversation.

Tuesday: Customer / User Research

Tuesday 6 September 7:30am - 8:30am

This session covers replacing speculation about the people you are designing for with facts in order to make more successful strategic and granular design decisions.
It covers:

  • Basic principles – Fundamental principles behind design research and how it fits into human-centred design.
  • Options for research – Types of research and identifying which one is the most appropriate.
  • Stages of a research project – The main activities that make up a research project.
  • Getting valid results – The main things to consider to get valid research results.
  • Method: Interview question design – Experience an assumption-based writing method

Wednesday: Information Architecture (IA)

This session introduces the basic concepts behind organising the content and functionality of a website or app, so that it is findable and usable to your audience.
It covers:

  • Basic principles – The fundamental concepts behind information architecture, how it fits into a UX design process, and the terminology you will encounter in an information architecture project.
  • Considerations when designing a good IA – The elements you need in place to ensure your IA design actually works with its intended audience.
  • Some best practice tips and hints – A collection of good IA design techniques and the human behaviour principles behind them.
  • A human-centred design approach to IA – How to include your users in the IA design process to ensure your IA actually works.
  • Method: Card sorting – Try your hand at card sorting, a method designed to uncover how people naturally organise information.

This session introduces basic concepts behind making good design decisions when designing user interfaces for screens.
It covers:

  • Basic principles – How people behave when using screens, and basic considerations when designing screen-based interfaces, including the terminology you will encounter.
  • Interface design considerations – How different device types, physical contexts, and user contexts shape your design decisions.
  • Designing for usability – Basic principles behind creating usable interfaces.
  • Designing for emotional experience – Basic principles behind how emotion affects the experience of a user interface.
  • Method: Responsive design – Try your hand at mobile-first, wide-screen first, and parallel design approaches.

Friday: Usability Testing

Our final session covers how to make sure your design actually works.
It covers:

  • Basic principles – The core concepts behind usability testing including the terminology you will encounter.
  • Technology and testing methods – The different options available for testing and the pros and cons of each.
  • Planning and running usability tests – The basic stages of a test and what you need to consider during each stage to get valid and usable results.
  • Method: Facilitating a test – Get first-hand practice taking someone through a small usability test.
